Mary L. Castaldi, 75, Logansport, formerly of Peru, died at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 1990, at her home after a brief illness. She was born Aug. 22, 1914, in Peru to Nicholas and Angela Mattiaccia Bessignano. On May 1, 1937, she married Harry A. Castaldi. He died Dec. 9, 1962. Surviving are two sons, Thomas E. of Fort Wayne, and Frederick J. of San Jose, Calif; two daughters, Ann Louise Smith of San Jose, Calif., and Barbara C. Harvey of Manchester, MD.; one brother, Dominic Bessignano of South Bend; three sisters, Margaret Martino of Hobart, Catherine Pasquale of Logansport, and Rose Pasquale of South Bend. Two sisters, Theresa Horvath of South Bend and Anna Bessignano of Peru, and one brother, Leonard Bessignano of Peru, are deceased.
Mrs. Castaldi was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Women's Catholic Order of Foresters, Daughters of Isabella, Sons of Italy William Paca Chapter, and was a volunteer for the heart fund and her church parish. She and her husband owned and operated a grocery store in Logansport. Mrs. Castaldi closed the store and retired Dec. 17, 1983, ending 103 continous years of the family's food business history in Lognsport. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
