County accepts wildlife haven
By Rae Ann Rockhill
Paul Zona got his birthday wish Tuesday when the Porter County Commissioners accepted his donation of 80 acres in Jackson Township for a wildlife sanctuary. Frank Zona said his father, who turned 89 Tuesday and is in failing health, wanted to preserve some of the county's natural areas, which are being lost to development. "Basically, he saw the Sand Creek development and it bothered him that so much land is getting eaten up," Frank Zona said. On behalf of their father, Frank and his sister Mary Ann Zona-Gregg approached the county about accepting 80 acres of Paul C. Zona Sr.'s property in Jackson Township. The land is south of the Indiana Toll Road and just west of the Porter-LaPorte County line. County Road 950 North borders the southern edge of the property. As part of the agreement, the land must be maintained as a wildlife sanctuary or it will revert back to the Zona family. A permanent sign will be added naming the property the Paul C. Zona Sr. Wildlife Sanctuary and county officials said observation trails may be added to the land. "To me it's overwhelming that someone like your dad would do this," County Commissioner Larry Sheets said. Zona-Gregg said the family wants the public to enjoy the heavily wooded land. "It's a beautiful piece of land," she said. "A lot of developments are coming in and we're losing more and more land. We can keep this natural."North County Commissioner Jim Biggs said the Porter County Wildlife Management Board will act as temporary custodian of the land while the commissioners investigate what guidelines may apply to establishing a wildlife sanctuary. County Attorney Gwenn Rinkenberger said other Zona property in Jackson Township is located within a federal forest preserve, so she wants to review the donated land as well to determine whether any federal guidelines must be met. However, she said the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Fish and Wildlife Division did say there is a precedent for having a county wildlife sanctuary.
Rinkenberger said an ordinance could be written to govern behavior in the sanctuary and establish penalties for violators.
Biggs said the county might consider asking the Porter County park board to become the sanctuary's permanent custodian although the land will never be a park.Dr. Larry Reed, a Duneland veterinarian who often treats injured wild animals in the area, said the sanctuary will give local veterinarians a place to release wild animals after they are treated. "We have a massive need for that," Reed said. "I can't just treat everything and turn it loose here. What doesn't get killed on U.S. 20 will go into people's homes." Reed said local veterinarians are often faced with the problem of where to release the rehabilitated animals. Neighbors don't want the animals near their homes, he said. "And some of these animals aren't initially shy of people," Reed said. "Having a place like this to release them gives them a place without contact with people. It gives them a nice place where they are left alone." Many of the animals treated by Reed at the Westchester Animal Clinic are released in the 20 acres he owns behind his home. But the veterinarian said that space is not nearly enough for the amount of wildlife losing their habitat to development. "Animals need a lot of room," Reed said. "The more you have, the better. And the more spread out they are, the less likely the animals are to interact with people."
