Reunion enlarges family portrait for Makielskis

Longtime residents of South Bend are familiar with the name Makielski. A trip to downtown often meant a stop at the Makielski Art Shop at 117 N. Main St. In addition to art supplies, the family is well populated with artists. It all started in 1881 when Alexander Makielski and his family emigrated from Poland to the U.S. His son, Joseph, was born several years later. Joseph married Theodora Doktor there. They built a stone house on the lake and completed it the 1930s. The house is still in the family with Joan (Makielski) Sniadecki and her husband, Paul, living there now. Joseph opened a small gift shop, which was originally called the Little Shop, in South Bend in 1911 and it eventually became the art supply store. Now 100 years after that Tuesday wedding more than 70 of their descendants gathered at Eagle Lake for a family reunion. here were representatives from all four offspring - Jack, John, Tom and Barbara. And since they are a very artistic family, each wing of the family had its own color-coded T-shirt. Jack’s people were in gray; Tom’s crew was in red; John’s in green and Barbara’s family was in blue. Makes it easy to find everyone. Jack and John are both deceased. Tom Makielski, of Rochester, N.Y., and Barbara Makielski Nania, of Indiana, Pa., came for the festivities. The oldest in attendance was first cousin Bob Makielski, 97. The chief organizer was Patricia Makielski (John’s daughter). She said there had been a reunion in 2004 and several people lobbied for another one. This year was a perfect time. “It is easier with e-vites and the Internet” to keep in touch. And she finds that the younger generation has a new interest in the family tree. Dave Makielski (Jack’s son), of Granger, operated the art store, which eventually moved to 3838 N. Main in Mishawaka. “I kept it open until 2011 until the 100th anniversary. I started in the business when I was 6, running errands. I had the honor of working with my grandparents, parents, siblings and cousins.” Dave said his father came home from the war and started back in the store right away. “He never intended on staying.” Dave said the store was a haven for artists. “Grandmother, who was an artist, kept a pot of soup on the stove for anyone who needed it. She fed the starving artists who came in to buy supplies.” Write to Kathy at kfborlik@yahoo.com. 7/24/2016
