SOUTH BEND - Bert J. Szymanski, 87, passed away at 10:14 p.m. Monday in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Survivors include his wife, Sallie (Kopczynski); children, Lawrence B. Szymanski, Duane (Louise) Szymanski, Joyce (Terry) Butler and Beverly (John) Barry; brothers, Daniel (Irene) Szymanski and Chester Szymanski; and sister, Alfreda Molnar. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday, April 24, in St. Joseph Funeral Home, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 25, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation will also be from 9-9:30 a.m. in the funeral home on Saturday prior to the Mass.

SOUTH BEND - Bert J. Szymanski, 87, passed away on Monday, April 20th, at 10:14 p.m. in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Bert was born on April 26, 1921, in South Bend, to the late Max and Louise (Myszak) Szymanski. On February 16, 1946, he married Sallie (Kopczynski), who survives along with their four children, Lawrence B. Szymanski of South Bend, Duane (Louise) Szymanski of Collierville, TN, Joyce (Terry) Butler of Rensselaer, IN, and Beverly (John) Barry of Covington, IN; five grandchildren, Thomas Szymanski, Craig Szymanski, Michael Barry, Robert Butler and Jacquelyn Butler; two great-grandchildren, Mikendra and Caedon Szymanski; two brothers, Daniel (Irene) Szymanski of South Bend and Chester Szymanski of New Carlisle, IN; and a sister, Alfreda Molnar of Muncie, IN. Bert was employed by the Studebaker Corporation until its closing in 1963. He then worked as a custodian for the South Bend School Corporation until his retirement. He served in the United Sates Army during World War II as a truck driver on the ALCAN Highway. He was a member of American Legion Post 357 and was a charter member of the West Side Conservation Club. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church. Bert met Pope John Paul II and received a Rosary from him. Bert loved to fish and was an avid NASCAR fan. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm. Friday, April 24, 2009, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 25th, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Visitation will also be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home on Saturday prior to the Mass.
