[N5904] Obituary for Umberto Portolese
Umberto J. “Bert” Portolese, 82 of Mishawaka, died Thursday May 23, 2013. The Mishawaka native was born April 12, 1931 to Frank and Dominica (Trimboli) Portolese and was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. On January 26, 1957 he married Mary E. Worsham in St. Monica’s Church. Bert retired from Uniroyal after 37 years but continued working in retirement, enjoying his job at McDonald’s. He was a member of the Italian American Heritage Club, Maria Diloreto Society and St. Monica Catholic Church. He always looked forward to his regular monthly card club, playing with good friends. Affectionately known as “Poochie” by his grandchildren, he was a devoted grandfather, a caring man with a good work ethic and a strong sense of family, who regularly treated his entire family to vacations in Florida, so that everyone could have fun together. He enjoyed gardening and loved to cook for family, friends and especially his grandchildren who will fondly remember his spaghetti dinners. In addition to parents, Bert was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Portolese and brother-in-law, Don Schimizzi. Bert is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary E. Portolese of Mishawaka; his daughters, Donna (DeWayne) Creighton of Bremen and Susan (Kirk) Barron of Mishawaka; son, Tony (Tami) Portolese of Mishawaka; grandchildren, Wayne & Mandi Creighton, Cory & Cassie Creighton, Cristopher Creighton, Taylor Creighton, Kirk & Malia Barron and Nathan & Monica Portolese; great-grandchildren, Kaylie Creighton, Colton & Chloe O’Keefe; sister, Mary Schimizzi; brothers, Ross (Mary) Portolese, Pat (Dorothy) Portolese, Tony Portolese, Joe (Beth) Portolese; sister-in-law, Rosalie Portolese; several cousins including Dr. Frank (Cathy) Portolese and several nieces & nephews.
