Walter Kowalski
September 8, 1919 - December 12, 2018
South Bend - Walter Kowalski, 99, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 in The Holy Cross Village, Dujarie House. Walter was born September 8, 1919 in South Bend to Frank and Josephine (Soboleski) Kowalski. On June 14, 1947 in St. Adalbert Catholic Church, Walter married Mary (Widawski) Kowalski. Walter was preceded in death by his wife on September 11, 2009, his parents, and brothers, Stanley, Al, Henry & Abe Kowalski. Survivors of Walter include his children, Connie (William) Harmon, Paul (Virginia) Kowalski, and Mary Jo (Dirk) Young; grandchildren, Ross (Lilly) Harmon, Roger (Alexis) Harmon, Daniel & Matthew Kowalski, Chelsea (Patrick) O’Hayer, Cassie & Jamie Young; great-grandchildren, Brooks, Margaret and Louis Harmon; and sisters, Irene Nies and Lottie (Harry) Zmyslo. Walter proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #284, where he held multiple positions, the 80th Blue Ridge Division, the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, and the 40-8. He was a Parishioner and Usher at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Lakeville. Walter was one of the founders of Kowalski Bros. Auto Parts. He enjoyed working and did not retire until the age of 90. Walter was also a very loving husband, father, and grandfather, best remembered as a hardworking man who loved his family dearly. Thank you to all the staff at HCV and Hospice for all their wonderful caring and kindness shown to Walter. Visitation will be 10:00am - 11:00am, Monday, December 17, 2018 in the Chapel at Dujarie House of Holy Cross Village. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00am. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. is assisting the family.
