SOUTH BEND - Julius DeMaegd, 84, of South Bend, passed away early Sunday morning, July 31, 2016, in St. Joseph Health System, Mishawaka. Julius was born November 16, 1931 in Mishawaka, a son of the late Edmund and Zulma (Warniers) DeMaegd. He grew up in Mishawaka and was a 1950 graduate of Mishawaka High School. Julius attended Thomas Commercial School, receiving a degree in accounting. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On November 22, 1952, Julius married Lorna Parkhurst. The couple made South Bend their home. Julius was employed at Oliver Corporation and South Bend Toy. His longest employment was in advertising with Drewry's Brewery. Julius also owned and operated an AirWick franchise. He was a life member and past commander and chaplain at VFW Post #360 and also belonged to American Legion Post #161 and the BK Club. He formerly belonged to the South Bend Kiwanis Club. Julius is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Lorna; two daughters, Julie (Debbie Moore) DeMaegd of Wakarusa and Melissa (Timm) Reber of White Pigeon, Michigan; two grandchildren, Michelle Fredenburg and Kyle Janowiak; two step-grandchildren, Crystal Reber and Shanna Armstrong; and three great-grandchildren, Julius Foley, Jaden Foley and Talon Armstrong. Julius was preceded by brothers, Raymond, Leon, Henry, Omer, Floris, Cyriel and Arthur DeMaegd; and sisters, Irene Smith, Margaret Seeley, Mary Finn and Alice Hassan. Services honoring Julius' life will be held Thursday at 1:30 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, with Pastor Greg Crump officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Visitation is Thursday from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm in the funeral home. The family asks those attending come with a smile and share a memory of Julius. Memorials are suggested to Center for Hospice Care or to the charity of the donor's choice .
