SOUTH BEND - Joseph R. Guzzi, 78, residing in South Bend, passed away at 4:50 pm Wednesday in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. He was born November 1, 1936, in Cicero, IL, to the late Joseph J. and Camille (Moravec) Guzzi. Joe proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 - 1958. He earned his bachelor's degree from DePaul University in Chicago and his master's degree from Indiana University South Bend. On September 28, 1957, in Cicero, IL, Joe married the former Patricia D. Drake, who survives. Joe and Patricia moved to the South Bend area in 1972 from the Chicago area. Joe retired from Bayer Corporation, Elkhart, in 1996 after 37 years. He was a longtime member of St. Therese, Little Flower Catholic Church. In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, Joe is survived by sons, Joseph (Julie) Guzzi of Mishawaka, John (Deanna) Guzzi of Brookfield, IL, and Jeffrey (Laura) Guzzi of Brownsburg, IN; daughter, Jennifer (Todd) Barker of Granger; ten grandchildren, Joseph and Jacob Guzzi, Jordan and Jackson Guzzi, Rachel and Caroline Guzzi, and Brett, Katherine, Luke and Sarah Barker; as well as one sister, Carol (James) Grealish of Radford, VA; and several nieces and nephews. Joe loved spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren, of whom he was extremely proud. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm Monday, December 15, 2014, in St. Therese, Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N. Ironwood Road, South Bend. Interment will take place at a later date at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends for one hour prior to Mass on Monday in the church. Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to St. Therese, Little Flower Catholic Church Outreach Program; or to the Salvation Army, 303 Chapin Street, South Bend, IN 46601.
