Helen Nagy Marvel Wilfing
Oct. 27, 1922 - Nov. 12, 2015
GRANGER - Helen was born to Mary (Vida) Nagy and Louis Nagy in South Bend, Indiana. She was the 7th of 11 children. She attended Stuckey School and Washington Clay High School. She quit school to help her mother with her stall at the Farmers Market. She took that stall, #17, over eventually, and sold her own flowers, peppers and kieflies for many, many years. Helen worked at Studebaker's, where she was nominated for Miss Studebaker in 1941. She then worked at Ball Band in Mishawaka. She married Rex E. Marvel on August 22, 1942. They were married for 33 years when Rex E. died in 1976. At that point, Helen went to work at Carleton Financial. Her favorite pastime was going to Cadillac, MI, every year to hunt for mushrooms with her sisters and, occasionally, other family members. Helen bowled on a league for many, many years at Chippewa and Beacon Bowling Lanes. Her team often went to the state championships. She married Rudolph J. Wilfing on December 27, 1980. Helen was known as the "Pie Lady." Thousands, yes, thousands, of people were gifted with her pies, and they all say that it is the best they've ever tasted. Her apple pie is the gold standard that everyone tries to reach but none have attained it yet. Helen loved nature. She always had a garden full of flowers and peppers. The wildlife will miss her because she fed the ducks, birds, deer, skunks, stray cats and all the night animals daily. Helen wanted to stay sharp and so she worked the daily crossword puzzle from the newspaper. She was also extremely proud of her Hungarian heritage. She listened to the Hungarian Hour every Sunday on the radio and even visited the mother country in 1995. Besides baking pies, Helen loved playing at the casinos. When she won big, she always shared with her church. Helen was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church from the time it was a little white church in the farmlands. She is a member of the Senior Group that provides meals for funeral luncheons among many other activities. Welcoming her alongside Jesus are her parents, Louis and Mary Nagy; her brothers, John Paul, Calman (Andy), and Frank; her sisters, Mary, Rose and Clarice (Gerri); her daughter-in-law, Susan Marvel; and sons-in-law, Duane Holte, Rex E. Marvel and Rudolph Wilfing. Left to honor her memory are: sisters, Irene Szucs and Kathryn Suppinger; and her cherished friend, Yvonne Vida; her children, Rex D. Marvel (Patricia), David (Susan, deceased), Paul (Deborah) and Mari Holte (Duane, deceased); step-children, Rudy Wilfing, Douglas (deceased), Gregory (Gail) and Scott (Pam); 22 grandchildren and 38 great-grand-children. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Tuesday, November 17, 2015, in St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 4-8 Monday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue, where a vigil service will be held at 7:00 pm. Visitation will also take place from 9:30 am until services Tuesday in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Pius X Church.
