[N4288] Anthony T. "Tony" Radecki
Apr. 24, 1921 - Apr. 18, 2012 SOUTH BEND - Anthony T. "Tony" Radecki, 90, a lifelong South Bend resident, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the Golden Living-Fountainview nursing facility in Mishawaka. He was born on April 24, 1921 in South Bend to Stanislaus and Balbina (Kruszynska) Radecki. He was married for 65 years to his loving wife, Lucille (Nowak) Radecki of Osceola, who survives. They wed on November 28, 1946, at St. Stanislaus Church in South Bend, and were lifelong members of that church. The couple owned the former Radecki Grocery at 1819 W. Linden Avenue, South Bend, a west-side neighborhood fixture from 1963 to 1984. Tony was a skilled butcher, whose Polish kielbasa was a must-have at Easter and Christmas for area residents. Tony answered his country's call during World War II, serving wounded soldiers as a special diets cook with the Army's 75th Station Hospital in Hawaii and Okinawa, Japan from 1942 to 1946. He was a lifetime member and past commander of VFW Golden Hills Post 8748 in South Bend. He worked tirelessly to support the VFW, running fund-raising and social events for decades and organizing a weekly euchre tournament at the post until his health prevented him from doing so. He was also dedicated to St. Stanislaus parish and was past president of the Holy Name Society. Golf was Tony's passion. His grocery store was closed on Wednesday afternoons so he could play a round at any course within a two-hour driving distance of South Bend. Tony hit two holes-in-one during his life, one at Bowlers Country Club in South Bend, where he was a member, and another at the former Sycamore Springs course in Indianapolis. Tony is survived by two sons, Lawrence Radecki of South Bend and Denis (Suzanne) Radecki of Terre Haute; and three daughters, Margaret (Larry) Galloway of Osceola, Luanne (Michael) Blackburn of Indianapolis and Judy (Scott) Skinner of Heathrow, FL; as well as 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Helen Potthast and Rita Czyzewski, both of Mishawaka, with whom he spent his last few months as they resided together at the Fountainview nursing facility. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Shirley Radecki of South Bend, and two brothers-in-law, Michael (Nancy) Nowak of South Bend and Floyd Galvas of San Jose, CA, along with numerous nieces and nephews and their children scattered across the globe. Tony was preceded in death by his parents and a beloved grandson, Larry "Curt" Galloway. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Radecki, and four sisters: Dorothy Wilczewski, Sally Wasowski, Harriet Radecki, and Clara Galvas. Tony's family would like to issue a special invitation to former customers of Radecki Grocery to join them as they celebrate Tony's long life at his memorial services. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive in South Bend, with a parish Rosary at 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery. Miller's Vets will provide military honors during the burial service. Memorial contributions may be made to the ministry of Tony's nephew, Rev. Richard Potthast, C.S.C., a missionary in Uganda, East Africa: Holy Cross Mission Center, P.O. Box 543, Notre Dame IN 46556.
