On July 28, 1902, "Elekne" [wife of Elek] Odor, 32, arrived in New York City aboard the "S.S. Zeeland" with sons: Zolton, 6, Arpad [Arthur], 3, and Bela [William], 2. They were on their way to to join their husband and father, Elek Odor, living at 605 S. Scott St., South Bend, Indiana. (Ellis Island passenger list) In the 1905 and 1906 city directories of South Bend, Alex Odor, a worker at Studebaker's, and his wife Helen were listed as residents.
By the time of the 1910 census, the family had moved to Aurora, Kane Co., Illinois, where "Alaxander" Odor was working in a brick yard. The census indicates that they had been married sixteen years, and Helen had had six children all living and all residing with them (in birth order): Zolten, Arlard [Arthur], and William, all born in Hungary; twin daughters, Rosa and Frances, and Oscar, all listed as born in Illinois. [However, the birth records of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in South Bend include the births of Rosa and Francisca Odor, and the WPA, "Indiana, Index to Birth Records, adds that they, Rosy and Francis Odor, were born in South Bend.] The 1916 and following city directories of South Bend again list Alex/Elek and Helen Odor. Elek Odor applied for naturalization in South Bend in 1916 but was denied. (image of naturalization card, familysearch.org) According to the 1920 census of South Bend, the household of Elek and Helen Odor included four of their children: Arthur, Rose, Francis, and Oscar. The 1930 census lists Oscar, his wife and daughter living with Elek and Helen Odor. In 1920 Elek was listed as working in an auto shop; in 1930 and 1940, as a carpenter. Helen Odor was naturalized in 1939 and Elek Odor in 1940. (images of naturalization cards, familysearch.org) Zoltan Odor married Theresa Bognar in 1916. (His given name transitioned in the census records from Zolten to Charles Z. to Charles.) William A. Odor married Rose C. Phillips in 1918. Arthur Odor married Blanche Nowicka in 1920. Frances A. Odor married John J. Killelea in 1924. Rose E. Odor married Waldo M. Sands in 1925. Oscar Odor married Anna Buytos in 1928.
