SOUTH BEND - Elsie C. Nowakowski, 100, passed away at 5:57 AM Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Milton Home, South Bend. She was born on November 17, 1914, in Nottingham, England, to Arthur William and Sarah (Whittaker) Palmer. On April 5, 1944, in Rothwell, England, she married Stephen E. Nowakowski. She was a G.I. bride and moved to South Bend, IN, in 1947, coming from Kettering, England. She became a United States citizen on May 9, 1951. Stephen preceded her in death on August 10, 1985. Elsie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul E. and Debbie Nowakowski; a special "daughter," Ruth Nowa-kowski; granddaughter, Jessica (John) Michael, all of South Bend; step-grandchildren, Kristin (Odell) Ford of Elkhart and Steven (Meghan) Morrison of Hoover, AL; great-grandchildren, Gage Michael, Josiah Ford, Hazel and Simon Morrison; her sister, Millie Hanlon of Kettering, England; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in England. One son, Robert S. Nowakowski, and three brothers and a sister also preceded her in death. Elsie was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, South Bend, where she belonged to Holy Comforters quilting group, Martha Circle, and Friendship Circle. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 11, at Holy Trinity Lutheran, 51900 Mayflower Road, South Bend 46628. Pastor Russell Snyder and Vicar Todd Lotridge will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4-7 PM Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, and at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Nowakowski may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Online condolences may be left for her family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com. Elsie Nowakowski
100th Birthday

Elsie was born in Nottingham, England on November 17th, 1914. During World War II she met and married an American soldier, Stephen Nowakowski. They were married in Rothwell, England on July 5th, 1944. Elsie came to South Bend in 1947 to be with Steve after he left the service. Together they had two sons, Paul and Robert. Robert passed away in 1966. She became an American citizen in May 1951. Elsie and Steve were married 41 years until his passing in 1985. She celebrated her Birthday with her son Paul (Debbie) Nowakowski, granddaughter Jessica (John) Michael, great grandson Gage Michael, a special "daughter" Ruth Nowakowski, and other family and friends. Celebrations were held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Sunday November 16th, with church service and a luncheon afterwards. She also received Birthday wishes from England, including from her sister, Millie Hanlon. She is pictured above with her son, Paul.
