SOUTH BEND - Rudolph "Rudy" Chester Yakym, Sr., 82, of South Bend, passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, July 17th, at the Hospice House of Elkhart. He was born in South Bend on May 5, 1933, to the late Harry and Paulina (Kuchar) Yakym. He retired from Uniroyal where he distinguished himself as a leader who was admired and respected by all who knew him. He was a problem solver and especially known for his ability to "get the job done." Rudy enjoyed spending time with his family, watching football and playing poker (sometimes until the sun came up). An avid fisherman, he took the family on many memorable camping vacations to Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. He won several fishing contests over the years at Uniroyal for the largest bluegill and perch. Rudy was an accomplished guitar player as well. Mr. Yakym is survived by his sons, Rudolph "Rudy" C. Yakym, Jr., Chuck Yakym, Steve Yakym, and Jim Yakym. He is the grandfather of 13 and the great-grandfather of 6. He is also survived by a sister, Josephine (Yakim) Heckman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Shirley (Kline) Yakym, daughter, Victoria Alexy-Cooper, son, Frank Yakym, his parents, Harry and Paulina (Kuchar) Yakym, 2 brothers, Steve Yakim and Wasyl "Bill" Yakim, and sisters, Pauline (Yakim) Stankiewicz, Mary (Yakim) Hogan, Justine (Yakim) Freeland, and Amelia "Emily" Yakim. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, July 20th, from 4 until 8:00 pm in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. A service celebrating Mr. Yakym's life will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, July 21st, in the funeral chapel, with Pastor Mike Cramer officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola. Published in South Bend Tribune from July 18 to July 19, 2015
