SOUTH BEND - Ralph Eugene Szczepanski, age 90, of Berlin, Wisconsin, formerly of South Bend, Indiana, died peacefully on Monday evening, March 19, 2012 at the Juliette Manor Nursing Home of Berlin. He was born on March 4, 1922 in Tammaroa, Illinois, the son of John and Anna (Nowakowski) Szczepanski. Ralph served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, in Germany. He was a full time member of the South Bend Indiana Fire Department for 20 years and then retired. His wife Irene died in 1970 and after her death he moved to Redgranite, Wisconsin and met and later married Betty Wallace- Barnhart on July 12, 1975. In the Redgranite area he sold machinery and his business was known as Ralph's Used Farm Machinery. Then in 1999 he again retired and moved into Berlin. He is a member of the Saint John Lutheran Church of Berlin and the Wells-Krause V.F.W. Post 2925 of Berlin. He is survived by his wife, Betty Barnhart-Szczepanski of Berlin; one daughter, Debbie (Aroon) Maben of Georgetown, Texas; three sons, Ralph Jr. of Mishawaka, Indiana, Ronald (Barbara) of Stevensville, Michigan and Dennis of Gobles, Michigan; one brother, Lawrence (Josephine) of Tammaroa, Illinois; one sister, Bernadine Geppert of Coulterville, Illinois; as well as 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren two great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Irene; one son, Larry; four brothers, Walter, Joe, Bill and Raymond; and one sister, Evelyn. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Saint John Lutheran Church of Berlin with the Pastor Bryan Lundquist officiating, and immediately following the service all are invited to the Saint John Fellowship Hall for a luncheon with the family. The burial will be on Monday, March 26, 2012 at the Saint Joseph Cemetery of South Bend, Indiana, where he will be laid to rest next to his first wife, Irene. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Saturday only, March 24, 2012 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Saint John Lutheran Church, located at 168 Mound Street, Berlin, Wisconsin 54923.
