SOUTH BEND - Jean Michael Bella, 78, of Huron Circle, died at 6:39 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Mr. Bella retired as corporal from the St. Joseph County Police Department after 17 years of service. He was born May 27, 1916, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident. On Sept. 28, 1940, in South Bend, he married Alice Bubelenyi. She survives with a daughter, Marie Jachimiak of South Bend; a son, Michael J. of Mishawaka; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Freymuth of South Bend; and a brother, Robert of South Bend. He was a member of American Legion Post 357, St. Joseph County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 155, and St. Stephen's Catholic Church, and was a veteran of World War II. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, where American Legion Post 357 will conduct military services. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Kaniewski Funeral Home, where a wake will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
