Brother John Leo May, C.S.C.
May 19, 1940 - June 30, 2018

NOTRE DAME - Brother John Leo May, C.S.C., age 78, died on June 30, 2018 at Dujarie House, in Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, Indiana. He was born in Monroe, Michigan on May 19, 1940, the son of Charles A. and Leona (Bruck) May. He attended St. Joseph Elementary School in Maybee, Michigan and graduated from Catholic Central High School in Monroe in June 1957, and had studied for two years at the Monroe Conservatory of Music. In the summer after graduating, he worked with the Holy Cross Brothers at their Notre Dame Camp in Bankson Lake, Michigan. He had been influenced by the Brothers during high school years and now decided to join Holy Cross. He went to Sacred Heart Juniorate in Watertown, Wisconsin and St. Joseph's Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Indiana where he received the habit of the Brothers on August 15, 1957. He made his first profession of vows as a Holy Cross Brother on August 16, 1958, began college studies at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, and transferred to Notre Dame to complete his degree in English and Music. In 1961 he was chosen to join the founding faculty at the Brothers new Holy Cross High School in River Grove, Illinois and served for four years. In 1965 he joined the first faculty at Bishop David High School in Louisville, Kentucky for five years. Brother John earned his master's degree in English and School Administration from Butler University in Indianapolis, with summer graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, University of Akron, and DePaul University. John's ministry assignments at River Grove and Louisville provided the administrative experiences which he used in assignments as assistant principal at Archbishop Hoban High in Akron for 8 years and at Gilmour Academy, where he served for 17 years in administration, management, and financial matters. His competence and reputation caught the eye of the Provincial, Brother William Geenen, who asked Brother John to come to Notre Dame in 1995 as a member of the Province Development Office, where he became Director of Planning and Mission Effectiveness for Holy Cross Village. He was the editor of the Brothers' Newsletter and a member of the Holy Cross Village Board of Directors, and supervised construction of many of the Village buildings; he was noted for his talent in taking care of minute details. He never lost his love for music - from singing in choirs to assisting in liturgical celebrations. He once said, “All of my ministries, from teaching English to being involved in different administrative roles have been challenging and rewarding. My years have been blessed with challenges and enjoyable ministries.” Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at St. Joseph Chapel with viewing from 9:30am to 11:00am on the grounds of Holy Cross College at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will follow with interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery of the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions, in honor of Brother John May, C.S.C., to support the mission and ministries of the Brothers may be sent to: Brothers of Holy Cross, Office of Development, P.O. Box 460, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Published in South Bend Tribune on July 6, 2018
