Freda Hornyak-Laiber
Oct. 25, 1921 - Dec. 3, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Freda Hornyak-Laiber, 92, passed away at 7:22 am Tuesday, December 3, 2013, in Hospice House from complications after falling off a ladder in her home. Freda was born on October 25, 1921, in South Bend, to Stephen and Bertha (Brahlick) Hornyak. She was a hairdresser for 35 years, retiring in 1990. Freda was inducted into the South Bend, Mishawaka and Indiana Bowling Hall of Fame. On December 30, 1939, in South Bend, she married Steve Laiber. He died on May 1, 1998. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Steve Hornyak, Anton Hornyak, Frank Hornyak and Julius Hornyak; and four sisters, Alma Katona, Ann Hornyak, Esther Katona and Margaret Compton. Surviving are two sisters, Julie Paksi-Zapalski of Vandalia, MI, and Frances Hojnacki of South Bend; and two brothers, John Paksi and Louis Paksi, both of South Bend. Freda was a very special lady. She was a kind and generous person. She loved her family and many friends and she was always ready to help anyone in need. She had a big heart that finally failed her. In addition to being a good bowler, a sport she enjoyed for many years, she was an excellent cook and baker. She loved baking Hungarian pastries so she could share them with family, friends and neighbors. We will miss her wonderful pies and kieflies, but we will especially miss her. Freda's family wants to thank all the people who cared and helped Freda over the years, especially her neighbors, Jim and Carol Miller, Dorthea and Ray Flory and Judy Daniels, and her very good friend, Mazie Laureys. We also want to thank the good people at Hospice House for caring for her at the end of her life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Friday, December 6, 2013, in Christ the King Church. Entombment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 3-8 today in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 South Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:00 pm. Viewing will also be held 1 hour prior to services in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice or to Pet Refuge.
