SOUTH BEND - Jane R. Gaski, 98, of South Bend passed away on November 17 at Center for Hospice Care in Roseland. Born in Chicago on March 10, 1918 to Frank X. Kindberg and Maude (Hanrath) Kindberg, Jane Ruth Kindberg Gaski was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, aunt, and friend. After childhood mainly in Chicago and Crown Point, Indiana, Jane Kindberg graduated from Crown Point High School in 1935 and then attended Indiana University in Bloomington as a psychology major. After two years on campus she had to return home to care for her ailing mother. She did remain active in the Chi Omega sorority for many years thereafter. In September 1945, Jane married Edwin J. Gaski, originally of Whiting, Indiana (deceased Feb. 1, 2000). In January 1949, son John was born in Gary, Indiana. He has been a faculty member in the business school at the University of Notre Dame for the past 37 years. Jane's adult life was spent in Gary; Crown Point; Long Island, New York; and most recently South Bend at the New London Lake condominiums. Jane Gaski's survivors are son John and nieces Julie Gaski and Dee Zarnosky of Crown Point. An avid gardener, golfer, reader, and, later in life, a quilter, a little-known fact about Jane is that in the early 1940s, just to satisfy her curiosity about private aviation, she became a pilot. She took flying lessons, obtained a pilot's license, soloed in a Piper Cub, and then gave up the hobby primarily due to the expense. Jane had only a few occupations other than homemaker. In the ‘40s she worked in the metallurgy department at U.S. Steel's Gary Works plant. In the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, she was bookkeeper at a weekly newspaper in Crown Point. Beginning in 1962, though, Jane served her true calling (other than motherhood) as second grade teacher at St. Mary elementary school in Crown Point. It was during that time that she resumed her own higher education and earned a bachelor's degree at Indiana University Northwest-a real achievement of time management. Following nominal retirement in 1975, Jane did substitute teaching and volunteered at hospitals and nursing homes. Jane could be described as highly intelligent, learned, refined, demure, petite, authentic, and also the nicest, sweetest person you could ever meet, a truly wonderful human being. She was recognized as always a perfect lady, yet also had a great sense of humor. A convert to the Catholic faith, Jane was devoutly religious. Exceptionally altruistic, she was the epitome of one who always put others' welfare first-a genuine humanitarian, as also manifested in her tireless volunteer work for local organizations including Busy Hands, St. Margaret's House, and Little Flower parish. Jane Gaski was the kind of person who was universally loved and revered, because she deserved to be. Even these superlatives do not do justice to Jane Gaski's quality and goodness. She was a special, precious treasure. Finally, Jane faced her own end stoically, with supreme dignity, poise, and grace. Almost everyone's mother is a living saint, to her child. This one really was, and the finest mother a son could have. Now she's an angel, too. The world is diminished by the loss of Jane Gaski. It is fitting to offer an adaptation of the verse Mrs. Gaski would sing to her little boy, many years ago: In lieu of visitation, information about memorial service arrangements will be forthcoming.
