March 7, 1933 - June 3, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Phyllis Joanne Buzalski, 79, of South Bend, died peacefully at 4:55 a.m. Sunday, June 3, 2012, in Hospice House of South Bend following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Buzalski was born March 7, 1933, in Etna Green, IN, to the late Gladys O. (Vining) and Clyde Allen Casner, and had lived in the South Bend area most of her adult life. On April 27, 1951, in South Bend, as Phyllis Casner, she married Leonard E. Buzalski, who preceded her in death August 10, 1985, after 33 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Wilfred "Bub" Casner. She is survived by two daughters, Linda S. Fox (William Jr.) and Doris Jean Buzalski, both of South Bend; two grandchildren, Rebecca Lynn Lopez (Joshua) and Christopher William Fox (Chenhsuan), both of South Bend; two great-grandchildren, Donnie and Dallas Lopez; and three sisters, Betty Love of Elkhart, IN, Donna Newland of Goshen, IN, and Rosalie Rogers (Dale) of South Bend. Phyllis was a charter member of the Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren, where she served in numerous positions on the church board. She was very active in the Women's Fellowship where she spent many hours helping to make their wonderful peanut brittle. She was a life member in the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, serving in all positions, including Commander. She touched the lives of many children in Clay Township by teaching knitting in the 4-H Club for over 40 years, as well as serving as Treasurer for Clay 4-H. The greatest legacy Phyllis is leaving with us is the wonderful creativity and gifts she gave through her knitting, crocheting and sewing. Her grandchildren and many members of her family and friends will cherish the gifts she made throughout her life. This also included the children of Prince of Peace Church where she became known as "Grandma Phyllis" when many of them received a handmade baby blanket when they were born. She was a lovely mother, grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 6th, in Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren, 53105 Ironwood Road. Committal services and entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m. today, June 5th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. Memorial contributions may be made to Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren, 53105 Ironwood Road, South Bend, IN 46635; or to The Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
