august 2008

Just to give you a little info on my Grandfather, Stephen (father Stanley Gacki, mother Johanna Piasecki) when he was a young man (18) he hurt his leg when he fell from a trolley car, the wound was not cared for properly so that he had problems with the leg and had to have the leg amputated. (I am not clear how old he was when lost his leg.)  That was why in later years he was making cigars in his home.

He passed away when my mother was 5 years old so she remember only a little about him, the info I have comes from my Aunt who was the oldest of the 4 children.

Thank you for your help on finding information on my Tramp/bum nickel ... so many (because of you) sent me information about cigar making and my coin questions!!!  I do so appreciate your taking the time to help me.

I was so pleased to receive the article from Libby Feil, (written by her) I had not printed it out and wanted a copy of it to add to my families history.  (She mistakenly thinks Mr. Niezgodski is my Grandfather, I will e-mail her and clear that up.)

One person Scott (I think) advised me to go to a coin collector (which I plan to do) but first knowing the coin was probably unique to the South Bend area ... I wanted to check that out before I took it to a coin dealer.

I told my mother (with my luck) a coin dealer will probably say "Gee lady, this nickel would be worth a lot of money if someone hadn't altered it!!!!!!"

With the information received, I have come to believe that the coin is probably not from the cigar company but a coin that "someone" made and gave to my Grandparents years ago ,,, but I wanted to be sure.  My Grandmother worked at Studebaker's for a least 20 years (I have her 5 and 15 year Studie pins)  ... maybe that was how/when the Indian was altered on the nickel. It is detailed I do wonder how they did it?
