Notes for JAN PIECHOROWSKI:

[Piech~52.ftw]

Jan was the first Piechorowski to come to this country.

Oral History states that he came from Poznen, however, if we look at that part of Europe at that time frame, Poznen was a province of Prussia.  If someone said "Poznen" at that time frame they could have been talking about either the City or the province.

The marriage certificate issued to Jan and Emelia at the church in Slupy on October 28, 1874 states that Jan was the "OVITIO" or Sheperd from the villiage of "BRZYSKORYSTEW" which is near Slupy.

Meyers Gazetteer describes the the area as a Nobles Estate of 169 residents, Kreis Znin, Posen. Civil Reg office was in Gutenwerder.

Emelia was described as "The Daughter of the Farmer from CHRPALEWO" another village near Slupy.

Jan and Emelia were married in the villiage church of Slupy, Poland on October 28,1874 by Father J. Sobeski. John was 26 and Emelia was 21.

(Per Slownik Geograficzny)

At this time Slupy was part of an estate, with its own parish church in Szubin county, Kcynia deanery, 7 km southwest of Szubin. Beside the church and post office a rail station was 12 km away in Kcynia. There were 14 homes, 271 Catholic residents, 1 Protestant, 789 Hectares of land ( 311 fields, 293 medows, 20 forest), A Brick Making plant, a Mill, a Distillery, a Cheese Factory and it was known for the cultivation of Dutch Cattle.

Jan immigrated in April of 1882 leaving the German port of Bremen on the SS Donau and arriving at New York on April 15,1882. By July 5, 1882 Jan purchased the first portion of the farm in Terra Coupe In. for the sum of $435 from John and Anna Floew. He later purchased additional land from Jacob Kaugon for $225 on 1/24/1895 and from John Brake for $200 0n May 30, 1888

The Ships Manifest for the SS Donau describes the family as:

Johann, 34, M,  Farmer

Emelia,  27, F, Wife

Helene, 4, F, Child

Stanislaus, 3, M, Child

Josefa, 2, F, Child

Stanislawa 9mo, F, infant

Andreas (Andrew) 59, M,

Michaline 50, F

We do not know why Jan lied on his naturalization papers stating he took passage on the SS Elbe which landed a week later in New York. Perhaps it was the beginnings of the Dementia which eventually claimed his life or the fact that there was little trust in goverment by Poles of that time who were mistreated by the Germans and held in contempt by the USA locals as the lowest rung on the immigration ladder. Jan did not become a citizen until 1918 when  it was neccessary to pass land to the children and he required the protection of US Title Laws.

As a former resident of Prussian Poland he was considered an enemy alien after WW1 making citizenship prudent given the German/Communist/Jingoist sentiment in post WW1 America.
