Notes for JAN JOHN DRAJUS:

The Drajus Family in South Bend, Indiana

Source: Candi Tyler, South Bend November 2007

Yes, Joseph did have other siblings.  He had three other sisters. Antonina, his oldest sister lived in South Bend.  His sister Magdaline and her husband were married in Chicago, but lived in South Bend.  They owned a bakery.  His sister Agnes lived in South Bend, but eventually moved to Chicago, where she died.

Joseph's parents were Jan and Katazyna (Balczerowicz) Drajus.  I have not been able to find anything on Jan, but Katazyna lived in South Bend with Magdaline and her family.  She died on 10/30/1908 and is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery.  There is a possibility Jan never made it to the states.

Andrew and Antoinette (Bilinski) Drajus are also related.  I was first told by family members Andrew was my great-great-great grandfather, but his birth did not figure into the mix.   He was born in 1832 and my great-great grandfather Jan was born in 1837.  I think Jan and Andrew may have been brothers, but I have not been able to prove that.  Andrew's death certificate did not name parents.  What I find interesting is Andrew did have chronic Brights Disease and Delphine (Klysz) Mezykowski has the same thing.  Delphine is a Drajus as well as a Brzezinski.  Her father was the son of Michael and Josephine (Drajus) Klysz.  Josephine was the daughter of Andrew and Antoinette.  I do know Antoinette was born in Wongrowiec.

I know very little about Maryanna (Herman) Drajus before she came to the states.  She died when my grandmother was 13.  Although I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, I never asked about the family history.  I could kick myself now.  Her father's name was Thomas, but I do not know the name of her mother.  She was not named on the death certificate. Joseph and Maryanna married here in the states.

I hope some of this will help.  Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Notes for FRANCIS JOHN SOKOLOWSKI:

This is the second born of George and Antonina (Drajus) Sokolowski. Frank never married.  He was born on the Herman ship, but baptized at St. Hedwig's Church.  The birth date on the church record is wrong.  He was actually born on June 12, 1881.  His real name was Francis John.  He was quite a character and liked by all.  He could stand on his head even as he aged.  He was quite the artist.  He worked at the fruit market which was located next to my grandparents drug store at 805 S. Chapin in later years.  In 1910 the fruit market was at 805 S. Chapin.  He hung around the drug store a lot.  After Michael Brzezinski's wife died in 1939, Frank moved in with Michael and his children on Walnut street.  He lived there until he died.

Hattie and her husband Stanley owned Pepper's Tavern which was on Chapin Street.  They were known for the delicious fish.  Many of the Catholics from the area would call in their orders on Friday and then go to the tavern to pick it up.  Many men from the area would go there after work for a few beers before going home

Notes for ALOYSIUS ALEX WISNIEWSKI:

Source: Candi Tyler, Feb 2008

Clara Paczesny married Alexander Wisniewski.  Alex came to the states with his mother, father, and siblings.  His mother died before they reached their destination which was suppose to be Fort Wayne.  His father was to meet his friend, Anthony Stasiak.  The only way, people will be able to document his mother's name and birth is to obtain a copy of the ship record.  Her name was Valentina and she was born in 1877.  The ship was the SS Breslau.  The ship left Bremen on April 26, 1906 and arrived in Baltimore on May 11, 1906.  Alex's father, Anthony re-married Mary Wlodarek in 1908.  Wlodarek was the name of her first husband.  Anthony and Mary lived at 617 S. Pulaski Street, in South Bend all of their lives and this is where Alex grew up.  Alex's siblings were :  Kazimiera, Stephen, and Rosalie.  Rosalie was born in Poland and her name is on the ship record.  The first census she appears in shows she was born in Poland.  The following census have her being born in Indiana.  It is also interesting that Stephen and Alex became US citizens with his father, but Rosalie did not.  She would have been granted citizenship.  Kazimiera did not receive her citizenship because she was too old at the time.  That occurred in 1916.  Mary brought three children to this union.  They were Konstancya, Veronica, and Ludwiig. I was not able to find Alex in the 1930 census.  At the time, he was not living with his father.  He did enlist in the US army on 9/10/1942 and served in World War II.  When he returned to South Bend, he was living at 1031 W. Dunham. Clara and Alex had one child, Clara Helen.  She married a man by the name of Mossell.  I have no other information on her.
